 Children are a precious gift…arriving on Earth with unlimited potential. As they become shaped by the circumstances in which they live, the potential and beauty in some becomes hidden. Like the original shards of glass before their entry into the ocean, these children may appear broken, sharp, and hence be cast aside. The rough edges they have developed keep others at bay. They create distance at a time when they most need closeness. Without the guidance of a trusted team of caring adults, they can be swept away just as the broken glass is pulled out by the tide. We need to intervene before they drift off too far.
When we believe in the potential of each child despite outward appearances, convey this belief to them, and intervene by empowering, we can transform them into the beautiful jewels they were meant to be. Just as the ocean turns discarded, broken glass into treasure, we have the power to help children find the treasure within.
